Photography Portfolio Website Design | WordPress Case Study

How we built a photography portfolio on WordPress in 6 days. Custom gallery, integrated booking, instant deposits and a 7.2% conversion rate.

Quick Answer: Shelby is a working photographer who needed a portfolio site that could book sessions and collect deposits without email back and forth. We built a custom WordPress site in 6 business days with an integrated gallery, online booking, and instant deposit collection. The site converts at 7.2% — the highest conversion rate in our current portfolio. This case study breaks down the problem, what we built, and what the 7.2% number actually means.

Most photographers do not need a website. They need a booking system that happens to look like a website.

Shelby came to us with a portfolio that showed her work beautifully and then left visitors with no clear way to book. Every inquiry turned into an email thread: what dates are open, what does a session cost, how do I pay the deposit, can you send an invoice. That back and forth cost her hours every week and lost bookings from clients who moved on to a photographer with a simpler process.

We rebuilt the site in 6 business days. Here is what changed, and why it converts at 7.2%.

    The problem

Three issues stood out on Shelby’s original site.

The gallery looked good but did not sell. A portfolio grid is table stakes for photographers. What was missing was the path from the gallery to the booking. Visitors could admire the work and then have no idea what to do next.

Booking happened over email. Every session started with an inquiry, a reply, a quote, a follow-up, a deposit invoice, and a confirmation. That is 6 touchpoints per booking. For a working photographer, that is 6 touchpoints too many.

Deposits were collected manually. Clients paid by transfer or PayPal, and Shelby had to confirm each one before a session was locked in. If a client paid late or not at all, the session was not really booked.

The result was a site that showed beautiful work and left money on the table.

    What we built

We rebuilt Shelby’s site on WordPress in 6 business days. Here is what went into it.

A custom WordPress gallery built for conversion

The new gallery does two jobs:

    1. Show the work at full quality. Full-width images, lazy-loaded so the gallery stays fast, organized by session type so visitors immediately know which category they are looking for.
    2. Move visitors toward the booking. Every gallery page has a clear “Book a Session” button. Every image can lead to a package page. The visitor never has to guess what the next step is.

This is the same conversion-focused layout we use across every WordPress website we build.

    Integrated online booking

The site now handles the entire booking flow in one place:

    • The client picks a session type
    • Sees real availability from Shelby’s calendar
    • Selects a date and time
    • Fills in a short intake form
    • Gets an instant confirmation

No email thread. No back and forth. The booking is locked in the moment they complete the form. Shelby sees it in the same calendar she already uses.

    Instant deposit collection

The deposit is now collected at the time of booking, not days later. That does three things:

    1. It filters out tire kickers. Someone who is not serious will not pay a deposit to hold a date.
    2. It locks in the booking immediately. No “I’ll pay you later” sessions that never happen.
    3. It removes the manual step of chasing payments. The deposit goes straight to Shelby’s account.

This is the same payment-flow approach we use on WooCommerce stores and Shopify stores — the checkout flow is not an afterthought, it is the product.

    A mobile-first build

Most photography clients browse on their phone. The new site was designed for mobile first. The gallery loads fast on mobile, the booking flow works on mobile, and the deposit form works on mobile. Every step was tested across devices before launch.

    A technical SEO foundation

    The new site has:

    • Clean heading hierarchy on every page
    • Descriptive alt text on every gallery image
    • Schema markup for local business and services
    • Fast load times across the site
    • A structure that Google and AI assistants can read and cite

That foundation is what makes the site visible before the booking even matters. See our SEO, AIO, and GEO services for what that looks like as an ongoing program.

    The result

Here is what changed, measured against the original site.

What 7.2% actually means. Out of every 100 visitors who land on the site, roughly 7 book a session. That is not a vanity number. It is the highest conversion rate in our current portfolio, and it holds because every page on the site is built to move the visitor to one clear next step: book a session. If you want to see how this compares to our other projects, the portfolio lists the conversion rate for every site that has a clear conversion action.

    Why this matters for photographers

Photography is a referral business with a search problem. Most clients find a photographer one of three ways: a referral, an Instagram post, or a Google search. All three paths end at the same place: your website.

Three things decide whether that visitor books or bounces:

    1. Can they see the work at full quality in under a second? A slow or cluttered gallery loses them.
    2. Can they tell exactly how to book? A portfolio with no clear next step makes them email someone else.
    3. Can they book without leaving the site? A booking flow that requires an email thread loses the client who was ready to pay right now.

Shelby’s site now passes all three. That is what a 7.2% conversion rate looks like in practice.

    Frequently asked questions

How long does a photography portfolio website take to build?

Shelby’s site launched in 6 business days from approval. Most photography portfolio sites take 5 to 10 business days, depending on how many galleries and pages you need and how quickly you provide photos and content.

How much does a photography portfolio website cost?

Most photography portfolio websites start at $1,200 for a starter build with up to 5 pages, including a custom gallery and contact form. Adding integrated booking and deposit collection is available as part of a Growth build starting at $2,400. See the full breakdown on our website cost guide.

Can my photography website take bookings and deposits automatically?

Yes. Shelby’s site uses integrated online booking with instant deposit collection. Clients pick a session type, see real availability, book a slot, and pay the deposit — all in one flow, without an email thread. We can set up the same thing for your site.

Do you build photography websites on WordPress only?

WordPress is our default for photography portfolio sites because it gives you the best control over galleries, speed, and SEO. We also build on Shopify for photographers who sell prints or products. We recommend the platform based on your needs, not our preference.

Can you improve the speed of my existing photography website?

In many cases, yes. A slow gallery is usually caused by oversized images or a heavy theme. A free website health check will tell you whether a speed fix is enough or whether a rebuild makes more sense.
